🎥 Should You REALLY Dry Your Filament? | Push Plastic Tells All Is drying your filament actually necessary, or is it just something we do so our printers don't feel neglected? In this video, I visit Push Plastic to get the real answers from someone who actually makes the stuff — Joshua Van Vleet, their plant manager. We talk about PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, Nylon, and even the mystical properties of brittle filament and emotional damage caused by failed prints. 😭 This is your one-stop shop for understanding filament moisture, annealing, brittle filament syndrome, and why your dryer might just be a very expensive nightlight. 🧪 Topics Covered: ✅ Should you dry PLA? ✅ Is PETG really that sensitive? ✅ When drying actually matters (Nylon!) ✅ Why your filament might be brittle (hint: it’s not always moisture) ✅ What annealing is and why it makes filament tougher ✅ How to save money, power, and your sanity when printing 🛒 **Affiliate Links & Coupon Codes (Help Support the Channel!):** Push Plastic USA Made Filament → https://www.pushplastic.com/?ref=WHERENERDYISCOOL 💸 Use Code: **WHERENERDYISCOOL15** (15% Off) 3D Fuel Filaments → https://www.3dfuel.com 💸 Use Code: **WHERENERDYISCOOL** (10% Off) VOXEL Filaments & More → https://voxelpla.com/wherenerdyiscool Polymaker Filament → https://tinyurl.com/4f74rywz My Recommended Tools List → https://amzn.to/3D9K2fP --- 💬 **Support the Channel:** • Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/wherenerdyiscool • Buy Me a Coffee → https://buymeacoffee.com/wherenerdyiscool --- 🎯 **Other Trusted Partners:** • Amazon → https://amzn.to/3B2QOnQ • Wham Bam Systems → https://bit.ly/3KJhHPY (Use Code: WNIC2022) • ZYLtech → https://tinyurl.com/mrxh3bz2 (Use Code: NerdyisCool) • MatterHackers → https://tinyurl.com/2kmwakzs • Slice Engineering → https://tinyurl.com/298kdsbk (Use Code: WHERENERDYISCOOL) --- 👍 Like this kind of content? About This Video

In this sponsored video with Push Plastic, I finally asked a filament manufacturer the question that’s been bouncing around YouTube forever: do we REALLY need to dry all our filament before we print? I sat down with Joshua Van Vleet (plant manager at Push Plastic) and we dug into the actual science—hygroscopy, what moisture can and can’t do inside an FDM printer, and why a lot of “dry it and it’ll fix everything” advice online is incomplete. Big takeaway: for most PLA, drying is usually not the magic fix people think it is. A lot of the issues folks blame on moisture are actually settings (especially temperature) or even mystery formulations where the spool says “PLA” but it’s effectively something else. We also talked about brittle filament, broken filament left loaded in the printer, and why that “dryer fixed it” moment can be annealing—not moisture removal—because heat can relax and toughen the polymer structure. Where drying absolutely matters is nylon (and a few other notorious offenders). If your nylon sounds like you’re cooking bacon, that’s steam popping and foaming, and drying can be the difference between a disaster print and a clean one. And yeah—drying doesn’t usually hurt, but it can waste power if you’re doing it when you don’t need to. As always: test, tweak temps, and please print safe.
