The CR-10 S5 rebuild gets serious. In Part 2, I upgrade this massive 500×500×500 printer with a Bondtech DDX direct drive extruder and a Slice Engineering Mosquito hotend — but is it actually worth it? This episode includes: • Bondtech DDX direct drive installation • Slice Engineering Mosquito hotend upgrade • 24V power conversion • Z-brace kit install • SKR3 control board prep • Replacing bed springs with solid spacers • SSR cooling for a large heated bed • ABS printed control box upgrades • Fixing unexpected issues from a used machine The goal? Turn an aging giant printer into a modern, reliable machine capable of true large-format prints. This project is just getting started. ▶️ Watch Part 1 of the rebuild: https://youtu.be/dq49nvZF33g Let me know in the comments: Should this CR-10 S5 stay on V-rollers… or is it time for linear rails? 🛒 **Affiliate Links & Coupon Codes (Help Support the Channel!):** Slice Engineering → https://tinyurl.com/298kdsbk (Use Code: WHERENERDYISCOOL) Push Plastic USA Made Filament → https://www.pushplastic.com/?ref=WHERENERDYISCOOL 💸 Use Code: **WHERENERDYISCOOL15** (15% Off) 3D Fuel Filaments → https://www.3dfuel.com 💸 Use Code: **WHERENERDYISCOOL** (10% Off) VOXEL Filaments & More → https://voxelpla.com/wherenerdyiscool Polymaker Filament → https://tinyurl.com/4f74rywz My Recommended Tools List → https://amzn.to/3D9K2fP --- 💬 **Support the Channel:** • Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/wherenerdyiscool • Buy Me a Coffee → https://buymeacoffee.com/wherenerdyiscool --- 🎯 **Other Trusted Partners:** • Amazon → https://amzn.to/3B2QOnQ • Wham Bam Systems → https://bit.ly/3KJhHPY (Use Code: WNIC2022) • ZYLtech → https://tinyurl.com/mrxh3bz2 (Use Code: NerdyisCool) • MatterHackers → https://tinyurl.com/2kmwakzs • Slice Engineering → https://tinyurl.com/298kdsbk (Use Code: WHERENERDYISCOOL)

About This Video

Welcome back—this one is Part 2 of my CR-10 S5 rebuild, aka the giant 500×500×500 Creality bed-slinger. After I asked you guys what to tackle next (this or my Fogger FT-6), 88% of you voted to get this monster running… so here we go. Fair warning: I lost some footage to a hard drive failure (second “one day out of warranty” external drive I’ve had die on me), but I’ll still walk you through what’s installed and what’s next. In this episode I modernize the toolhead with a Bondtech DDX direct drive setup and a Slice Engineering Mosquito hotend—both upgrades I’ve had great luck with on other machines. I also convert the printer from 12V to 24V, which means every fan had to be swapped to 24V versions, and I’m prepping for the electronics side with an SKR3 control board mount that I reprinted in ABS so it won’t get soft or sketchy inside a warm control box. On the bed side, I’m ditching springs for solid spacers and keeping an eye on the mesh, plus I’m running an SSR with a heatsink and fan because I’m not interested in getting spicy with AC. I also install a Z-brace kit to stiffen the frame (with a little MacGyver hardware moment), and I’m still on the fence: do we keep V-rollers, or is it time for linear rails? Let me know—this project is just getting started, and I’m even tempted to do a Marlin vs Klipper comparison across my two S5s. Print safe.
