In this upgrade overview, I’m finally dragging my Creality CR-10 S5 (aka the S500) off the sidelines and turning it into something I can actually trust for big prints. This is that huge 500x500x500 bed-slinger that people either love or hate—and honestly, the frustration usually comes from the same stuff: bed leveling on a giant bed, a whole lot of moving mass, and older hardware that just isn’t keeping up anymore. I’ve got two identical machines, I’ve been stockpiling parts, and this video lays out the plan before I break each upgrade into its own focused install video. First up is structure and stability: I’m adding Z-axis support rods to stiffen the gantry and a belt synchronizer to mechanically link the dual lead screws so the gantry is less likely to drift out of skew. I’m also ditching the bed springs for solid spacers, because on a printer this big, fighting springs is just not a good time. Then we get into the “old girl” electronics—moving from 12V to 24V, swapping in an SKR 3 board with TMC2209 drivers, and setting it up so I can independently control both Z motors for advanced leveling in Marlin. Finally, I’m going with a Bondtech DDX and a Slice Engineering Mosquito hotend, plus quieter 24V fans and a proper enclosure setup to control temps and vent the nasties outside. The goal is simple: reliability, better print quality, and a CR-10 S5 that feels modern again—while keeping things smarter and safer.
