We finally escaped winter and rolled into warmer weather in Charleston, South Carolina (okay…technically Sullivan’s Island), because we’ve got Florida and the Tampa RV Super Show coming up. Before we played tourist, I knocked out a whole stack of “van chores” on Mr. Lemon—patched the coolant reservoir, resealed the skylight, adjusted the backup camera, changed the oil, rotated tires, reconnected the stereo mic, and sealed the sliding door window plus marker lights that have been giving us those annoying, intermittent leaks. Because there’s no fun part of van life without that part. Then we went full history-nerd at Fort Moultrie using our America the Beautiful pass, learned way more than we expected (including the whole artillery/hearing loss thing), and walked through powder magazines, Rodman guns, and all the wild engineering it took to move 50,000 lb cannons. After that we hit Rainbow Row and the Charleston City Market…in absolutely brutal rain because we thought it wouldn’t start until 4 p.m. (Spoiler: we were total dummies and left the umbrella in the van.) We also pulled a Lemon Box “VIP treat,” which meant ordering the most expensive thing on the menu—so we went to Magnolia’s and I got the seafood gumbo (yes, it had alligator…yes, it was almost 50 bucks). And the big takeaway? Charleston is not stealth-camping friendly. We learned it’s illegal to sleep in your vehicle there, so we aborted the downtown plan and headed to a Cracker Barrel instead—dry, safe, and honestly…TV in bed fixed my mood real quick.
