This week on The Lemon Route, we head deeper into America than we’ve ever been—Louisiana, the Deep South—and it doesn’t take long for it to feel completely different than anywhere else we’ve been. We start out at a Harvest Hosts spot outside of Lafayette where the “rule” is simple: if you want to stay, you’ve gotta do the swamp tour. That was a win-win for us anyway, because we came for the swamp vibes… and ended up getting one of the best, most relaxing (and slightly concerning) swamp tours we’ve ever done. We got insanely close to alligators, learned how their nests work, and heard stories like “Stella jumped in the boat already,” which is not something I needed in my life. Of course, it wouldn’t be us without a little lemony chaos. Our RV is still doing RV things—like leaking—so I try to diagnose and “fix” a stubborn window seal with a duct-tape shim and a water test. Spoiler: epic fail. We also do our best to make vanlife-ish feel normal again with waffles, gumbo, and Bob’s one-pot “jumbolaya” situation. Then Louisiana hits us with the biggest surprise: we find Rutherford Beach, one of the few places in the U.S. where you can legally drive and camp right on the beach for free. Hard-packed sand, no bugs (in March), dolphins in the morning, and a population-of-352 town to knock out our Louisiana challenge. Top three boondocks, easy.
