We took Mr. Lemon (our Class B RV) into Washington, DC during the holidays… and yes, it felt like it might have been a mistake at first. Instead of trying to white-knuckle downtown parking, we did what I’d recommend to any RV/van traveler: stay outside the city and ride public transit in. We started at Cherry Hill RV Park, where the bus/Metro setup is shockingly convenient (you can even buy Metro passes right there). No parking stress, no downtown driving drama—just us being cold, slightly confused, and very committed. Day one we hit the Washington Monument and the White House (as close as they let you get—heads up, tours require applying way in advance). Then we went full “vanlife-ish” and made a second DC run by parking the van at a Metro station with a very confusing sign/app situation… and hoping for the best. We rode three trains, walked a ton, froze a lot, and it was still worth it. We finally got to the Lincoln Memorial (the statue is massive—video doesn’t do it justice), rode Lime e-bikes over toward the Capitol (with a little phone-lockout chaos), and made it through the tunnel into the Library of Congress. Bonus: we snagged Library of Congress library cards as our favorite free souvenir, made it back to the van with no ticket, and called it a win.
