✨ Tallboy Off-Road BOTTLE JACK (6 TONS) Link: https://www.etrailer.com/Automotive-Tools/Power-Mountain/PM34FR.html?etam=a0065 This repair almost ended our trip. What started as a simple alternator fix quickly turned into one of the most stressful moments of our entire vanlife journey. Between leaving our Class B RV at an airport for the first time, racing the weather, and trying to make it home for Thanksgiving, everything felt like it was working against us. In this episode, we’re wrapping up our time in Kentucky, including a stop at the Harland Sanders Café & Museum, before realizing our alternator issues aren’t done with us yet. From boondocking on limited battery power to navigating RV parks, airport parking height limits, TSA inspecting an alternator in our checked bag, and finally installing the replacement ourselves, this episode had it all. We also share what it’s really like to prep a van to sit at an airport for over a week, how much RV airport parking actually costs, and what we learned the hard way so you don’t have to. This is real vanlife, the good, the stressful, and the moments that almost stop the trip entirely. 🍋 Welcome to The Lemon Route - where not everything goes as planned, but we keep rolling anyway. After finishing up the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, we hit a snag with Mr. Lemon, our Class B RV, on our way to North Carolina for a Thanksgiving dinner flight. This travel video captures the real van life problems we faced, highlighting the challenges of a roadtrip when things don't go as planned. It’s a true look at the van life breakdown, but we're still rolling!

About This Video

Kentucky tried real hard to not let us leave. We wrapped up our time there with a stop at the Harland Sanders Café & Museum in Corbin (free museum, and yes… I had to try the full KFC spread), but the real story is the alternator saga that nearly stopped everything. We were bouncing between boondocking and RV parks because cloudy weather meant solar wasn’t keeping up, and we could basically only boondock one night before we had to recharge. On top of that, we had to get to North Carolina for a flight home for Thanksgiving, and our replacement alternator was waiting for us… in Arizona. Because why would anything be simple on The Lemon Route? Then came the “we’ve never left our van at an airport” adventure. We cleaned out the fridge, dumped tanks, killed power, and rolled into airport parking just to discover the 9'6" clearance is not a suggestion. Yes, we love-tapped the A/C. When we got back, it was cold, it was snowing nearby, TSA had definitely inspected the alternator in our checked bag (fair), and we held our breath checking for leaks, cracks, and dead batteries. Good news: solar kept us topped off and we only had a little moisture. Finally, I installed alternator #2 myself—jack up, safe supports, rewired harness (because the plug didn’t match), belt on, and then the moment of truth: charging. Seeing ~80 amps going in with no shore power was a huge win, and I adjusted the belt load manager so we don’t cook another one. Stressful? Yes. But Mr. Lemon rolls on.
