Have you ever booked something that sounded magical… and then immediately realized you played yourself? Yeah. That was us in Norfolk, Virginia, doing Winterfest on the USS Wisconsin while it’s 32° with 15 mph wind (and getting worse). Before we could even step on the battleship, we had to pull a Lemon Route card—because every 1,000 likes/subs/comments, we let a lemon decide our fate. We pulled “Adventure add-on,” which basically means: congrats, you’re freezing AND you have to go spend more money on another activity. Even with the brutal cold, touring the USS Wisconsin was 100% worth it. Once we got below decks, it was fascinating (and honestly a little claustrophobic) seeing the tight living quarters, the mess hall, the machine shop, and how people actually lived on a ship built in 1944 and used through multiple wars. Then we made our next terrible decision: driving to Virginia Beach for a holiday lights drive as our “extra activity.” It was expensive, confusing, and not even close to as good as the battleship. We wrapped it up with real vanlife-ish stuff: a battery/power update (alternator recharge is crushing it), pizza in the Ninja oven that briefly tripped power, a windy Cracker Barrel night, and one last freezing walk to the ocean so we could officially mark Virginia complete on our Lemon Route rules.
