We kicked off 2026 in Florida thinking we were doing our usual vanlife-ish thing… and then we did the most un-vanlife-ish move possible: we traded the van for a 48-foot motor yacht for 48 hours on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville. Our friends Kevin and Taylor from Mathers on the Map (plus Logan and Wyatt) are in the middle of prepping for the Great Loop, and they invited us to ride along for a leg. We left Port 32 Marina, dealt with tight bridges, shallow water warnings, and learned real quick that boating is basically constant attention—current, wind, depth, and crab pots all want a piece of you. Bob’s one mission was to earn helm time, and yep… they actually let him drive. We talk through the controls, how docking and fuel costs compare to RV life (we watched 300-ish gallons turn into $1,000+), and why the pace on the water feels totally different. On a boat, you can make lunch, work, and move around while you’re underway—try that at 75 mph in a van.
