About This Video

In this video I’m showing you how I’m protecting the exposed intake on my 3rd gen Tacoma after doing a full fender trim. I get a ton of questions about the trim and if I like it—yeah, I love it, but I only did it because I’m going bigger tires later. If you’re not going bigger, I honestly don’t recommend trimming because everything gets way more exposed and way more dirty, especially in the rain. After a little off-roading here on the Central Coast, you can see mud getting thrown everywhere, including into the door jamb and up into that intake area. So I put together a cheap DIY fix using a 4-inch 90-degree PVC elbow that slips over the intake. I cut it down the middle to get clearance, used a leftover strip to close the gap, angled it upward so the tire isn’t flicking water and mud straight into it, and then I silicone the heck out of it. I also talk about drilling a drain hole at the bottom if you’re worried about water getting in during something like a Pismo river crossing. Two days later it’s holding solid, covered in mud on the outside, and it hasn’t popped off—so for a quick $10–$20 ghetto rig, it’s doing its job.
