Is fuzz your thing? Because today I’m checking out the Vox VFZ-1 Fuzz, and it genuinely goes from sweet, edge-of-breakup crunch to properly blown-out vintage fuzz vibes. This one’s a sponsored video thanks to the lovely people at Vox Australia, and I run it through a rig that really lets this style of pedal shine: a Voxy/Matchless-ish amp (my Cherryotone Creme Brulee) into a Two Notes Torpedo Captor X. In my opinion, this fuzz reacts a lot depending on the amp you hit, and this darker-yet-chimey kind of platform just works better than a super bright Fender-style thing. The VFZ-1 keeps it simple but useful: fuzz and volume, plus a tone cut (low-pass) and bass cut (high-pass) so you can tame woolliness and carve out a mid-forward voice by trimming top and bottom. There’s also a Crunch/Fuzz switch, and honestly the difference between the two is big—Crunch feels like a dirty, colored boost, while Fuzz is the higher-gain “full send” mode. I demo it with a Laravee, a T-style Yamaha Pacifica, and then low tunings (B standard) on a modified J Mascis Squier, and it stays dynamic with volume changes and pickup swaps. My big wishlist item: a separate footswitch option to toggle Crunch/Fuzz mid-song, because that would make a cool pedal even more versatile.
