About This Video

Guild sent me two guitars, so I did what any reasonable human would do: I ripped the boxes open, tuned them up, and plugged them in for the very first time. This is a proper “first impressions / unboxing” thing—no deep spec dive here because full videos for each guitar are coming. In this one I’m just checking how they feel straight out of the box, how the necks feel, how the hardware behaves, and most importantly… what noises they make. First up is the Guild Surfliner Deluxe in this absolutely gorgeous salmony/pinky/champagney color. I run it into my Engle Retro Tube 100 (clean and then dirty), and I mess around with the 5-way positions—honestly, that middle position ended up being my favorite. Out of the box it felt really well put together: no sharp fret ends, smooth neck, good-feeling pots and switch, and it stayed in tune surprisingly well. Then I unbox the Guild Polara Deluxe in a killer blue-green vibe (seriously, both colors are fantastic). It’s lighter, the neck feels wider (not fatter), and it’s set up brilliantly—frets polished, no sharp ends, and basically dead straight. The big fun discovery here is the push/pull coil taps, which gave me a bunch of usable sounds (not pure Strat, but definitely more single-coily/vintagey). If I had to pick one from pure first impressions, I’d probably buy the Polara—mainly because I don’t have anything that looks like it.
