About This Video

It’s time for another shootout between these super pedals: the OG Boss BF-2 flanger (old Japanese-made, powered properly on 12v ACA) versus the all-digital Plugout PX-1 set to the BF-2 model. I ran a straight-up, real-guitar test through the Mozztronics amp switcher into the Cherry Tone OTS MIDI 20, then into the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X for IRs and a bit of verb and whatnot. No funny business—just “everything at 12:00,” then we start poking the knobs to see if we should be outraged… or not outraged at all. We hit it with P90s first, then swapped to Alex’s Squier Classic Vibe Tele HS (with Bigsby and Mr Glyn’s pickups) to see how the flange reacts with a different guitar and pickup set. The big takeaway? Soundwise, they’re pretty damn spot on. The main differences I noticed were more about control feel—resonance/depth/rate seeming ever-so-slightly different—rather than one being “better.” And honestly, a lot of that could just be vintage tolerances between individual BF-2 units anyway. If you live at the extreme settings (you know who you are), you’ll notice the PX-1 and BF-2 don’t line up perfectly at the edges. But in the real-world, more adult settings—especially slower rates—this is one good sounding flanger situation, and the digital version hangs right in there.
