About This Video

I finally got my hands on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, and I wish you could’ve seen the level of excitement on my face when I cracked this box open. It’s been years since I’ve done a massive camera gear haul like this (seriously, probably back around 2016), so this one kicks off a longer set of unboxings. In this first part I go through what’s in the box—manuals, sticker, the DaVinci Resolve Studio code (I already own it, so a friend’s getting it), and the regional chargers—then we get to the good stuff: the BMPCC 4K itself. I also answer the big question: why buy a “year and a half old” camera, and why not the 6K? For me it’s simple—Micro Four Thirds. I’ve invested heavily into the MFT ecosystem (especially my Voigtlander lenses), and I’m shooting my content in 4K anyway like I already do on my GH5, so the 4K just made more sense. I talk first impressions on the build (rubber feels nice, but it does feel like a step down from the GH5’s magnesium body), the massive non-flip screen, and the infamous battery situation—yeah, that little battery isn’t exactly a powerhouse, so I’ve already got a solution coming. To wrap it up, I throw on my Voigtlander 17.5, power it up, check for dead pixels, and show real on-camera BRAW footage with a temporary LUT I made to bring the colors back. I also compare it to a recent GH5 shoot and tease the next section: unboxing the cage that makes this rig possible.
