About This Video

In this video I’m basically doing a “Franken desk” build: I took two 72" x 29" tabletops and cut them into three pieces so I could make an oversized UPLIFT L-shaped standing desk—an 87" main run and a 57" return. This isn’t a full UPLIFT installation tutorial (their instructions and existing videos are already good). Instead, I’m sharing the messy, stream-of-consciousness tips that actually matter when you’re doing a custom layout: where the legs can realistically go, how far you can push the rails, and how to keep the whole thing stable and level. The big takeaways: don’t overhang the top too much, keep the frame-to-edge distance consistent, and keep adjusting gaps as you move legs/rails around. I also explain why I chopped about 15" off one top, why I repositioned the corner leg to better support the center of gravity (lifting issues are a real thing if weight distribution is off), and how I attached the tabletop pieces together using extra brackets—plus a lazy-but-effective trick with nail plates (taped over sharp edges). The cut wasn’t perfect and I did chip the vinyl, but my wife fixed the visible stuff with a color pen, and the final result honestly looks surprisingly not horrible.
