Using an unscientific test, we observe spikes in power usage to try and determine whether tinting saves on CPU / GPU cycles and battery life in iOS 26.1 (Release Candidate). About This Video

In this video I do a very unscientific (but still useful) power draw check on iOS 26.1 Release Candidate to see if the new “Tinted” look actually saves battery—or if it makes things worse. I’m using a fully charged iPhone Air and a USB‑C power meter so we can watch real-time wattage spikes while I do normal stuff: browsing MacRumors, scrolling like crazy, pulling Control Center up and down, checking the lock screen, and flipping through Photos. First I run everything on “Clear.” With the screen off I’m seeing basically 0–1W, and during typical scrolling and UI interactions it’s not that bad—peaks around ~3W in my quick sample. Then I switch to “Tinted,” and honestly it looks like tinting might increase power usage in some moments. I saw a spike to ~5W and even hit ~6W once, although I couldn’t consistently recreate it (it may have been the page loading). My takeaway: based on these momentary, subjective flashes, I didn’t see convincing evidence that tinting reduces battery drain—if anything, it looked slightly higher here and there. TBD with better experiments.
