Apple used to make terrific iPhone docks—back to the iPhone 2G—with swappable cradles that were stable and didn’t stress the connector. Even the old Lightning Dock, while a little questionable because it put weight on the port, ended up working great for me for years. But now that we’re in the USB-C iPhone era, there’s basically no “real” iPhone dock in sight, and that’s why I tested the Cable Matters USB-C dock to see if it’s the dock we’ve been waiting for. In this brief review, I go through what’s in the box, the port selection (USB-C power, HDMI, Ethernet, USB 2, USB 3), and what it actually does in real use. Spoiler: for iPhones, it’s not it. The big deal is that I couldn’t get data transfer working—neither through the main USB-C connection to a MacBook nor through the side USB ports—so that main USB-C port is basically just power-in. HDMI output works (I tested it with an LG DualUp), but because it’s a vertical dock, your display output is effectively vertical unless you do something awkward like flip the dock sideways. I like the build quality and the way it supports the phone without stressing the port, but I recommend waiting for an improved version that can do data + display over a single USB-C cable.
