About This Video

I’ve been on a proper nostalgia journey lately, so I dove headfirst into emulation and tested four very different ways to play retro games: two pocket handhelds, the Steam Deck, and then the full “tickle that nostalgia bone” option in VR. In this video I walk through what each setup is actually like day-to-day—what feels plug-and-play, what needs tinkering, and where you’ll want to temper expectations. First up is the Anbernic RG35XX: it’s basically a tiny Game Boy vibe that somehow runs a ridiculous range of systems (GB/GBC/GBA, SNES, Mega Drive, PS1, arcade). The screen is surprisingly sharp for 3.5 inches, the buttons feel great, and it’s genuinely impressive for around 60 quid—just don’t expect perfect QC on every single ROM. Then I step up to the Powkiddy RGB20S, which adds analog sticks and opens the door to PSP/DS/Dreamcast/N64 (again: not always flawless, but often very playable). After that I show why the Steam Deck is my favorite “power handheld” emulation experience with EmuDeck—clean UI, great comfort, and loads of systems, but you’ll need to source your own ROMs and do more setup. And finally, I go all-in on immersion with Quest 2 + EmuVR, where you’re literally loading cartridges into consoles in a virtual bedroom. It’s involved to set up, but it’s one of the most fun things you can do on a VR headset.
