Does this Heritage H-530 have a warm, smooth enough sound to compete with the larger archtops? We will put it to the test. Plus… I try out several other cool archtops and answer your questions!

About This Video

This week on my Live Jazz Guitar Hang, I put a rare Heritage H-530 through its paces—one of those super thin, fully hollow archtops that’s surprisingly hard to find. The big question was simple: can a thin body still give you that warm, smooth jazz sound that usually comes from the bigger boxes? I ran it direct and also through a Henriksen, and I’ll tell you straight—this 530 has a creamy tone and a lot more “fat” on the top end than many thin guitars that can get kind of dinky. We also got into the real-world stuff that matters: comfort standing up (thin bodies win for me), the tradeoff between thin vs fat archtops for versatility, and the practical details—Heritage-wound P90s, laminate construction, fixed bridge, neck feel, and weight (about 6 lb 3 oz). I talked strings (my 13–48 custom set), shared some old-school feedback survival tactics (pillow batting, anybody?), and we played a little “Name That Tune” with Black Orpheus, Bluesette, and Beautiful Love. I wrapped it up with a quick lesson on “groups of four” sequences so you’ve got something musical to take to the fretboard right away.
