Hello everybody—another beautiful day here in the Guitar College television studio… and yes, we’re still putting the studio back together after hauling everything to the Central Coast Jazz Guitar Fest. In this live hang I do a full recap of the Fest: the classes, the concerts, the lobby and dining-room jams, and all the little moments that make a weekend like that worth it. I also throw out the “question of the day” about which class or seminar actually sticks with you, because most of the time you walk away with 100 ideas and maybe two that really change your playing—and that’s plenty. We also talk jazz guitar concepts that came up at the Fest—things like targeting thirds and sevenths, listening for “quality” as a target sound, and why I’m always pushing you to sing before you play. Improvisation is the sum total of what you’ve worked on, but a line still needs a beginning, some meat, and an ending—getting it up in the air is one thing, landing it is the whole deal. And then we finally get to the Gretsch: my Gretsch G5120 (I even misspoke and called it a 6120 at first—welcome to live TV). I give you the basic specs, talk about what I changed on it, and play it so you can hear what this affordable, Indonesia-made archtop can do in a jazz setting.
