About This Video

In this Thursday Jazz Guitar Hang I’m coming to you from Atascadero, California with Wes running the buttons and Gail on the message board. We kick things off with some playing (including “Green Dolphin Street”), then I get into what this livestream really is: you bring the questions, and I’ll go wherever the conversation goes—arrangements, improv, keys, and the real-world stuff that happens to guitar players. A big topic today is how to “stretch out” a short fingerstyle arrangement so it works on a solo gig. I talk about what Joe Pass ran into on his first solo gig, then I show a practical solution: use the chord changes as your roadmap—outline with arpeggios, connect with scale material, add an intro, change the tempo, go rubato, and even start on the bridge or pull a vamp to build a longer performance. We also talk setlist thinking (don’t stack too many tunes in the same key), and I remind you to give your hands a break—put the guitar down for a few seconds between tunes. Then I show a few archtops in progress, including a ’68 ES-175 shell I rebuilt with new electronics and a Railhammer pickup, plus an L-4 conversion project with a pickup route and controls coming together. I also talk nut widths, old guitars, and why some instruments just have “that” sound.
