About This Video

Well, hello out there—this week’s Live Jazz Guitar Hang was one of those “we’re late because the gear is acting weird” kind of days. I was trying to kick things off with “Joy Spring” (Clifford Brown—great tune), and the sound just faded out on me. Turns out it was one of those simple problems that’ll make you feel crazy, but we got it sorted and got on with the fun: tunes, questions, and a deep dive on a really sweet archtop. I spent a good chunk of time showing a 1992 Guild X-500 Stuart—full-size L-5 style body, fat jazz sound, and a 24 3/4" scale length that makes those “badass chords” a little friendlier than the 25 1/2" crowd. I talked about setup too, because this matters: when I got it, the action was sky-high, so I did major filing on the bridge, straightened the neck, and now it plays great. We also compared tones through different options (Henriksen, Quilter, and blends), and I explained what I’m after: that coveted sweet, direct jazz sound. On the lesson side, we talked about memorizing tunes (not just reading the Real Book), how I like to write a song out to prove I really know it, and some practical fretboard approaches—octave shapes, and playing scales on every string while naming notes. We even got into “greasy Misty” (think bluesy swing instead of a straight ballad), plus a few harmony questions like minor ii–V–i options and how to think about tension without losing the function.
