About This Video

In this Thursday Live Jazz Guitar Hang, I’m wrapping up the “final goodbye” to my one-of-a-kind Gibson L5 that was specially made in the late ’90s. I talk through the backstory, why these archtops take so much time and work to build, and why letting a great guitar go is sometimes part of the “ebb and flow”—especially when you’re a dealer. I also get into the reality of selling a guitar: sometimes you keep the price private because the new owner (or their significant other) might not want it broadcast. We hang, we laugh, we talk gear, and I play some tunes—including a little Beatles moment and “Autumn Leaves,” plus a blues to close things out. Tone-wise, I keep it simple: I’m going direct into the board with just a touch of reverb (concert hall on the ProFX dial). And because this is Guitar College, I also drop a practical lesson: how to practice a three-octave chromatic scale with the shifts, the B-string exception, and how to take it around the cycle of fourths for a real-world workout. Clean sound, solid fundamentals, and a little archtop fun—pretty much my favorite recipe.
