In this Live Jazz Guitar Hang, I’m comparing two D’Angelico archtops in a real-world way: a floating pickup archtop versus a humbucker-mounted archtop. I play, I listen, and I talk through what matters to serious jazz players—clean jazz tone, feel under the hands, and how the pickup choice changes the character of the guitar. One of the guitars is that D’Angelico EXL-1 Premiere with a floating pickup (and yeah, it’s a beautiful sunburst), and the whole point is to hear what the floater does compared to a mounted pickup on a bigger archtop. Because it’s a hang, we also get into the stuff that actually helps you on the bandstand: what tunes you should call at a jam session, why “simple” tunes can still go deep, and why the melody is king (if you lose the melody, you’re screwed). I also show a comping idea I really like—the 2-5-1 comping challenge—so you build fast “go-to” chord reactions when you’re reading or comping behind somebody. And of course, it wouldn’t be one of my Thursdays without a little chaos, a few laughs, and some straight talk about practicing, setups, and getting your guitars to feel consistent.
