Hey, gang—this one is a live Thursday hang, and it’s a big one for me because I’m doing the final goodbye to my one-of-a-kind red Gibson L5. I wasn’t planning on selling it, but a really nice gentleman from Oklahoma called and said he wanted one of my red L5s. We jumped on a Zoom call, I showed him both, and he picked the “real fancy one”—my “Christmas guitar.” I talk through what makes it special, why I believe it was a NAMM show build from the early 2000s, and some of the specs that matter (like the 1 3/4" nut width and how you can still set the string spacing to something more comfortable). We also get into the real-world stuff players deal with: fingernails. I’ve been through the whole circus—acrylics, super glue, press-ons—and I’ll tell you straight: some of that stuff is a pain in the butt and can ruin your nails. Lately I’ve had better luck keeping my nails strong (biotin/collagen), but when one breaks at the worst possible time, I show what I use: square-tip nails with adhesive tabs (not glue), plus a little “Hard As Nails.” And since we’re talking practical guitar life, I also answer a humidifier question and show my cheap, effective DIY case humidifier (a plastic medicine bottle, holes drilled, sponge inside).
