I start the episode the only sane way: “pray return to the Gold Saucer” for a little smidge of gamber, because obviously I’m convinced today is the day I win big (it is not). I also get distracted by community chaos, questionable trades, and the ongoing conspiracy to get me to “throw wide the gates” (I’m not doing it). Oh—and yes, I acquire an emotional support fire dog, which is absolutely necessary for what comes next. Then it’s time to stop stalling and “pray return to the MSQ,” where the vibes instantly turn into pure PTSD. The Alliance leaders and Emperor Varis sit down for a parlay, and I’m sat there like: this is the perfect place for everything to go catastrophically wrong. We get the Black Rose threat, Varis doing Olympic-level mental gymnastics, and me trying to reconcile how he can sound smart for five seconds and then immediately say something cooked. The big takeaway: the Empire isn’t here to make peace, and every line in this meeting feels like foreshadowing with a knife behind it. Stormblood ends with the tension cranked to maximum, and Shadowbringers is staring me down.
