In this video, I test the Paka Apu Lightweight jacket that uses a new type of Alpaca Wool Insulation. It's marketed as a better alternative to synthetic insulation jackets and as a competitive alternative to down insulated jackets. I put it all to the test (to the best of my abilities), to find out what it's really like. ▼ ALPACA WOOL JACKET (affiliate link) Paka Apu Lightweight Insulated Jacket ➜ (Paka: https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tool_type=cl&merchant_id=7bc197a1-6d43-4cc5-a16f-6bb3ee0c391e&website_id=00f5b60f-5b24-479f-ab2d-8d5328a2ac5a&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pakaapparel.com%2Fproducts%2Fmens-apu-lightweight-puffer%3Fvariant%3D40188842082388) ▼ THRU-HIKING POSTERS (MADE BY ME & MY GF) Shop hiking trail posters here ➜ https://trailgoals.com/ (10% discount code: oscarhikes) Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/trail.goals/ ▼ GEAR I USE (affiliate links) Outdoor Vitals Novapro Down Jacket ➜ (Outdoor Vitals: https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tool_type=cl&merchant_id=7e589116-9b06-4f1d-beee-aa18820b0454&website_id=00f5b60f-5b24-479f-ab2d-8d5328a2ac5a&url=https%3A%2F%2Foutdoorvitals.com%2Fproducts%2Fnovapro) Decathlon Forclaz MT100 Down Jacket ➜ (Decathlon: https://www.decathlon.com/products/forclaz-mt100-hooded-down-puffer-jacket-167571?variant=32494250360894) Nikwax Down Wash Direct ➜ (Amazon: https://amzn.to/3IDA1ds) Nikwax Down Proof ➜ (Amazon: https://amzn.to/49T9O6L) Outdoor Vitals Fortius 2P Ultralight Tent ➜ (Outdoor Vitals: https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tool_type=cl&merchant_id=7e589116-9b06-4f1d-beee-aa18820b0454&website_id=00f5b60f-5b24-479f-ab2d-8d5328a2ac5a&url=https%3A%2F%2Foutdoorvitals.com%2Fproducts%2Ffortius-2p-trekking-pole-backpacking-tent) Outdoor Vitals Stormloft 0F Quilt ➜ (Outdoor Vitals: https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tool_type=cl&merchant_id=7e589116-9b06-4f1d-beee-aa18820b0454&website_id=00f5b60f-5b24-479f-ab2d-8d5328a2ac5a&url=https%3A%2F%2Foutdoorvitals.com%2Fproducts%2Fupdate-stormloft-0-30-f-down-topquilt-sleeping-bag) Nemo Tensor Insulated Sleeping Pad ➜ (Amazon: https://amzn.to/3RJhVw9 ) Brynje Mesh Base Layer ➜ https://www.brynjeusa.com/ref/16/ Smartwool Merino Wool Socks ➜ (Amazon: https://amzn.to/4anHY3h) Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks ➜ (Amazon: https://amzn.to/3GJnnsm) ▼ TABLE OF CONTENTS 00:00 - Intro 00:30 - Why Alpaca Wool 01:44 - About Alpaca Insulation 03:05 - Paka Jacket 03:51 - Warmth Test 06:42 - Water Test 10:52 - Summing Up ▼ FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA https://www.instagram.com/oscarbrumelis/ https://www.tiktok.com/@oscarhikes ▼ AFFILIATE DISCLOSURE In some of our videos, we sometimes use affiliate links. About This Video

In this video I’m testing something that’s getting hyped a lot lately: alpaca wool insulation. Specifically, I put the Paka Apu Lightweight puffer through a couple real-life tests to see if it’s actually a legit alternative to synthetic insulation (oil-based, cheap, works when wet) and down (best warmth-to-weight, packs tiny, but expensive, annoying to wash, and… yeah… birds). Alpaca is interesting because it’s natural, harvested by shearing (no animal cruelty), and it’s supposed to be warm, odor resistant, and even thermo-regulating. I compared the Paka Apu (475 g, $279) against two down jackets: the Decathlon Forclaz MT100 (270 g) and the Outdoor Vitals NovaPro (390 g). After a mountain-top test and a “sit still in a cold hut with nothing underneath” test, I landed on this: warmth-wise, the alpaca jacket sits between those two down puffies, but closer to the warmest one—roughly like a 350 g down jacket. That’s where my “about 35% heavier than down” takeaway comes from. Then I did the wet test, and this is where marketing and reality split. The alpaca jacket didn’t clump like down, but it soaked up a lot of water and lost loft, and I got colder faster than with treated down. My conclusion: it’s a solid third option and I like it, but it won’t beat treated down in truly wet conditions.
