In this video, I try to answer a simple, decades-old question: Does cotton kill? Because from my own experience, I've noticed that cotton clothing doesn't actually feel that much worse compared to synthetics. In this video, I compare a full cotton setup with a full synthetic setup to understand which one is warmer, which one dries quicker, which one absorbs more sweat, and so on. ▼ HIKING PRINTS (MADE BY ME & MY WIFE) Hiking trail posters ➜ https://trailgoals.com/ (10% discount code: oscarhikes) Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/trail.goals/ ▼ GEAR I USE AND RECOMMEND (some are affiliate links) Outdoor Vitals Ultralight Backpack ➜ https://alnk.to/esZaRo4 Outdoor Vitals Quilt ➜ https://alnk.to/6IHPHv9 Sea to Summit Sleeping Bag Liner ➜ https://amzn.to/4nsNreU Nemo Tensor Insulated Sleeping Pad ➜ https://amzn.to/4nJt9Or Decathlon Foam Sleeping Pad ➜ https://www.decathlon.com/products/backpacking-foam-folding-mattress-trek-100-174619 Trekology Pillow ➜ https://amzn.to/3I56BIE Katadyn Befree Water Filter ➜ https://amzn.to/3KgAsOM Titanium Spork ➜ https://amzn.to/4mboYtw Titanium Pot ➜ https://amzn.to/3JOEqye Lightload Towels ➜ https://amzn.to/4d9Ikuo Decathlon Trekking Poles ➜ https://www.decathlon.com/collections/hiking-camp-accessories/products/hiking-pole-arpenaz-200 Swiss Army Knife ➜ https://amzn.to/3JSTjj3 Darn Tough Socks ➜ https://amzn.to/3GJnnsm Brynje Mesh Base Layer ➜ https://www.brynjeusa.com/ref/16/ Alpaca Wool Hoodie ➜ https://www.pakaapparel.com/products/alpaca-hoodie Marmot Rain Jacket ➜ https://amzn.to/4ni0a3M Decathlon Down Jacket ➜ https://www.decathlon.com/products/simond-mt100-hooded-down-puffer-jacket-167571 Outdoor Vitals Sunshirt ➜ https://alnk.to/gVNMAPI Headlamp ➜ https://amzn.to/48aNVlg Power Bank ➜ https://amzn.to/3Va7qCR Thermometer ➜ https://amzn.to/3JWYmyM COROS NOMAD GPS Watch ➜ https://coros.avln.me/c/tRsMSBkbLjzs (get a free extra band with discount code "OSCARHIKES"!) About This Video

Whenever outdoor clothing comes up, it’s always the same chant: synthetics good, wool great, cotton bad. “Cotton kills,” “cotton arms with coffin,” all that. But I kept noticing something annoying in real-life hiking: cotton doesn’t actually feel that much worse than synthetics most of the time. So in this video I stopped repeating the slogan and did actual testing—full cotton setup vs full synthetic setup—to see what’s warmer, what dries faster, what absorbs more sweat, and what starts to stink first. I tested them dry and stationary below freezing (no real difference), then in medium-intensity hiking (2.5 km, 400 m gain at ~4°C), where synthetics did a bit better mainly because they absorbed less sweat. Then I went into the “survival-ish” test: both outfits completely drenched at ~5°C, moving to regain heat and then standing still. Honestly, wet fabric is wet fabric—both made me cold and miserable, and the difference wasn’t dramatic. The big real downside is drying time and water retention: cotton soaked up 49% of its weight vs 31% for synthetics (about 60% more), and it took ~7 hours to dry vs 3.5 hours for synthetics. Cotton also stayed fresher longer smell-wise. My takeaway: “cotton kills” is a big overexaggeration—learn when it’s fine, and when it’s just inconvenient (or risky).
