About This Video

Flying with hiking gear is one of those things that sounds simple until you’re standing at security holding microspikes, tent stakes, a stove, and trekking poles… and literally nobody can tell you a straight answer. In this video I break down the basics of luggage (personal item vs carry-on vs checked bag), and then I go piece-by-piece through common backpacking gear so you know what’s clearly banned, what must be checked, what must be carried on, and what lives in that annoying gray area where it “depends on your luck” and the officer you get that day. I also share how I prep my backpack for checking so it doesn’t get wrecked or delayed: close zippers, tighten and hide straps, loosen shoulder straps/hip belt and buckle them across the front, and ideally cover the whole thing. I’ve done the “no loose straps” method for years without issues, but I’m also planning to try the trash-bag-and-packing-tape trick (leave the handle exposed) to keep everything from snagging on conveyor belts. Finally, I cover practical travel tips like booking direct flights to reduce lost-luggage risk, using luggage tags, keeping electronics and spare batteries in your personal item, and remembering that fuel canisters and alcohol fuel are a hard no—buy them at your destination and plan how you’ll get rid of them before flying home.
