Paka Apu Lightweight Insulated Jacket (Paka

I tested the Paka Apu Lightweight puffer because it’s using 100% alpaca wool insulation and it’s being marketed as a legit alternative to synthetic and even down. Warmth-wise it landed between my two down jackets (closer to the warmer one), but when it got soaked it held a lot of water and lost loft, so I wouldn’t treat it like a miracle wet-weather puffy.

Pros

  • +Natural insulation sourced by shearing alpacas (no animal cruelty)
  • +Thermo-regulating feel when hiking hard (I noticed less sweating vs down)
  • +Odor resistance due to oleophobic fibers
  • +Easy maintenance compared to down
  • +Hand pockets lined with microfleece

Cons

  • -Expensive for the warmth ($279)
  • -Heavier than down for similar warmth (about 35% by my estimate)
  • -Soaks up a lot of water when wet and loses loft
  • -Elastic cuffs leave a small gap (not my favorite)
