Mesh base layers are that weird outdoor trend nobody asked for… and yet, after testing them on my own skin, I’m still convinced they’re the warmest base layers out there. In this video I re-did my old “mesh vs tight-weave” comparison properly, because my first attempt two years ago had flaws (and I also had way less experience with mesh back then). This time I compared four options: synthetic tight-weave, merino tight-weave, synthetic mesh, and merino mesh—then I went out and basically burned like 7,000 calories trying to prove (or disprove) the claim. I explain the simple science first: mesh helps water vapor escape instead of soaking the fabric, and the gaps trap air (and trapped air is insulation). Then I ran a consistent hill test (1.4 km, ~250 m gain, 3°C): sweat on the climb, then 20 minutes sitting in the shade, rating how cold I felt. I repeated the whole thing in reverse order on another day, and also did four early-morning stationary tests at -1 to -2°C. The big takeaways: mesh is warmer than tight-weave—especially when you’re active and sweating. Merino is warmer than synthetic in tight-weave, but in mesh the merino vs synthetic difference is barely noticeable. For most winter hikers, I’d pick synthetic mesh as the best overall; merino mesh mainly wins on odor control, but it’s pricey and not durable.
