For Isla (nearly 5), the absolute winners have been longer, chapter-style stories—especially Enid Blyton collections like The Famous Five and The Faraway Tree series. They’re engaging enough to hold her attention, and they also support our reading because she starts to recognise characters and storylines. I love that we can then borrow more of the same books from the library and she already has the context.

Which Yoto cards do toddlers actually enjoy too?

Even though my collection is mainly geared toward Isla, Iris (2.5) enjoys a lot of the same listening, especially the shorter story collections like Beatrix Potter. Winnie the Pooh also became a favourite for both girls over time. Sometimes it takes a little encouragement at the start, but once they connect with a story, they’ll replay it constantly.

They’re honestly some of our most played cards, and Enid Blyton is probably our most-loved author in this house. I like that many of the cards include multiple shorter stories, not just one. They’re also great for themed shelves—seasonal stories are perfect to rotate in and out.

Do the Beatrix Potter Yoto cards include more than one story?

Yes, and that was a big relief for me because I worried I was getting ripped off if a card was only a couple of minutes long. Each card includes “and other stories,” so across the set you basically get the whole Beatrix Potter collection. We already love our treasury at home, so having them in audio form is lovely.

Is Alice in Wonderland on Yoto too hard for young kids?

It can be a tricky one because it’s a bit confusing, so we actually read the novel together first and stopped to talk through parts. After that, Isla absolutely adored the Yoto card and now listens to it all the time. The narrator does an amazing job with all the different character voices, which really helps.

I’m really excited about the My First Classical Music collection because it gives us an easy way to play music without using my phone. The girls often request music, and Yoto Radio can be a bit hit or miss. This set includes things like orchestra, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart, lullabies, violin, ballet, and piano—so it’s incredibly useful.

How do Make Your Own Yoto cards work?

They’re brilliant—you can record your own audio and load it onto the cards using the app (MP3 files work well). My plan is to have grandparents record stories for the girls, which is especially meaningful for us as expats. You can also record yourself reading library books, and even add a little picture label so children who can’t read yet can choose independently.
