About This Video

In this video I’m sharing my top tips for fostering bilingualism (and I’m using “bilingual” as a blanket term for bilingual or multilingual homes). I’m Jennifer, a Dubai mum of two with a French husband, and before staying home I worked as an early years and primary teacher—so I’m bringing both the Montessori lens and real-life home experience to this topic. If your child is hearing more than one language at home, at school, or with relatives and you’re worried they’ll get confused, I want to reassure you and give you a clear plan. I talk about why Maria Montessori identified 0–6 as the sensitive period for language, and why it’s never too early (birth is best) to start. I explain why I stick to my native language with my girls (I speak English, Laurent speaks French), and why consistency—people, places, and language “rules”—helps children feel secure. I also share what to expect: mixing languages, preferences, and phases are completely normal, and the best approach is patience and modelling the correct sentence rather than correcting. Finally, I address a big myth: bilingualism does not cause speech delay—if you’re concerned, see a specialist who understands bilingual development, and make sure both languages are counted.
