In this video I’m sharing my Montessori approach to potty learning—because it really is different to the “potty train in three days” style you see everywhere. Montessori potty learning is a longer process introduced at the right time, in a prepared environment, so your child is set up for success. I walk you through my top tips, like avoiding rewards and punishments, staying calm through accidents, and remembering that using the toilet is just another skill (like reading and writing) that takes time, mistakes, and lots of patient guidance. I also share exactly what I did with Isla, and what I’m doing now as Iris (16 months) moves into that sensitive period for potty learning. We talk about practical setup (IKEA potty, books by the potty, child-safe cleaning supplies, laundry hamper), why naked time and cloth nappies can help, and how I handle potty learning on-the-go with short trips and a potty in the car. Finally, I explain how I phrase prompts (“It’s time to sit on the potty”), how I use a simple sign for pre-verbal toddlers, and what to do if your child protests—empathize, hold the limit, and let natural consequences teach the lesson without shame.
