If you’ve been put off by Instagram-perfect shelves and expensive materials, I promise you don’t need the “right stuff” to do this well. I start with the most important principle: respect for the child. For me that means gentle hands, kind words, being truthful (without baby talk), getting down to their level, listening properly, giving warnings before transitions, and including them as an equal member of the household. From there I talk practical life (caring for the environment, self-care, caring for others), going outside as your best free resource (even here in Dubai), and fostering independence through routines, time for independent play, and not helping too much. I also show how to follow your child through observation (including schemas and sensitive periods), simplify your play space with toy rotation (no fancy shelf required), DIY simple activities from what you already have, slow down your pace, and use positive discipline—avoiding rewards, punishments, bribery, and timeouts—so your child is motivated to do the right thing because it’s the right thing.
