About This Video

In this preview I’m putting the Storm Ion Max Pearl and the Roto Grip Gremlin Tour-X back on your radar, because they were announced early and now they’re almost here. Release date is March 13th, and balls are already starting to hit the lanes for staffers, so I wanted to catch you up on what each one is designed to do and where it should fit. I also address why my full reviews will likely land closer to release—Storm isn’t sending my channel balls early anymore—so I’m leaning back into doing these info-heavy previews after announcements. For the Ion Max Pearl, I break down why it’s basically the shiny pearl version of the Ion Max: low 2.47 RG, high .055 diff, and .014 int diff—borderline mild asym territory. To me, it’s very similar in concept to the Gem/Exotic Gem relationship, but the Ion Max line tends to be less “chuggy” and more continuous and dynamic down lane. It’s still a nano-based cover, so it won’t live in the super clean/quick response world of balls like Hyperdrive Pearl, Gremlin, or Equinox. Then I dig into the Gremlin Tour-X as a tour-style asym meant to fill the void left by the Tour Dynamics and/or the original ION Pro. With the Rondur Tour-X core numbers (2.48 RG, .034 diff, .011 int diff) plus a stronger VR-1 Hybrid cover at 4000 grit, I’m expecting earlier, stable, smooth control—without the “turns into a marble when it shines up” problem I had with the Tour Dynamics.
