About This Video

In this video I get super in-depth with Storm’s new Ion Max Pearl, and I’ve got PBA Regional Pro Zach Rhoades with me to talk real comparisons and where this ball actually fits in an arsenal. I’ve already got a bunch of games on it (including an 812), and I explain why I lightly touched the surface—still shiny, basically like a 30,000 lane shine, but I hit it with 3000 to help slow it down and blend out the motion. With the box shine it was a little too pushy and a little too snappy for what I wanted, so that small surface tweak helped it read the midlane without killing the whole point of a pearl. We also get into the “on paper” comparisons—yeah, people look at it and think Exotic Gem—but shapewise it’s different. The Exotic was more chuggy and could be hard to use as a true transition ball, while the Ion Max Pearl is still strong but a lot cleaner and more throwable across more environments. We compare it to the Origin too: for Zach (and what I’m seeing), the Ion Max Pearl is cleaner, more sweeping/arcy, and it lets you chase left longer before it wants to lock up and go forward. Biggest takeaway: this isn’t my favorite fresh-condition look on lower-friction, but as that first transition ball out of your big solid, it’s a legit keeper.
