About This Video

This video is my extra-deep dive on the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane 78D — and yeah, it’s “back”… but it’s not the original Purple Hammer. I didn’t do my normal, super-edited review format here. I just got on the lane, threw it a bunch, and talked through what I was seeing in real time, because urethane (especially 78 hardness) is its own weird animal. The big story is the recipe: it uses the harder 78D-style cover like the Black Hammer, but it’s got a stronger core, and I drilled it with a 4-inch pin specifically because this one actually has differential and will flare. Reaction-wise, I kept seeing it read the lane quicker and harder than the Black early, but then it can “lay off” downlane — almost like it does its move up front and then softens. It’s still a ball you’re going to keep in front of you, and you’re not going to bend it like the original Purple where you could get in, send it, and watch it still pick up and go through the pins right. The flare matters a ton here because fresh cover keeps touching the lane every rotation, so it can keep digging. Bottom line: it’s not a Purple replacement, but it’s more ball than the Black when the Black is close and just isn’t seeing it enough.
