About This Video

In this video I put the Hammer Hammerhead Pearl through my updated review process (same style I used on the Black Widow 3.0 Dynasty). I tested it at Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence, Kansas on Kegel Chromium, using my standard fairly neutral symmetric layout, and I threw it straight out of the box. The cover is HK22 Aggression Pearl at a 1500 grit finish with compound (not polish), and the core is the same symmetric spheroid core (2.48 RG, .048 diff in 15 lb) that a lot of longtime Hammer fans will recognize. Reaction-wise, this ball is interesting because it feels like it “glides for 30 feet and then puts the brakes on.” It’s cleaner up front than something like the Hazmat Pearl, but when it sees friction it slows down fast and gets into more of a hook-set, hockey-stick look that’s on the forward side of directional. For me, that created a pretty clear matchup issue: playing straighter was basically a no-fly zone, and I had to keep my speed up and get around it—two things I don’t combine well. If you loved the Hammer Effect-type look, I think you’ll like this (a touch weaker and smoother). If you need rounder, more continuous shapes, this is probably one to skip.
