For decades we’ve all laughed at “the year of the Linux desktop,” because no matter how much better Linux and macOS got—and no matter how many times Microsoft face-planted—Windows just kept winning. In this video, I lay out why I don’t think that’s guaranteed anymore. I’m not rooting for Windows to lose (I like being able to run ancient software in compatibility mode, okay?), but the cracks are getting harder to ignore, and it’s starting to feel like the year of Windows humiliation. I dig into what’s changing across key user groups, starting with gamers: Proton, the Steam Deck, and gamer-friendly distros have made Linux gaming “press play” easy in a way it simply wasn’t before, while Windows keeps trying to be a giant, un-dismissible ad for OneDrive, Edge, and Game Pass. Then there’s the OEM/prebuilt world, where Windows still gets pushed hard through partner incentives, keeping Linux buried and overpriced. And finally, Apple: with Apple silicon and aggressive value plays like the M4 Mac Mini and the MacBook Neo, macOS is suddenly a much bigger threat for mainstream buyers. The big takeaway is that Microsoft’s recent “we’ll do better” course correction—fixing search, dialing back Copilot cruft, even bringing an Xbox-style full-screen mode to PCs—looks less like generosity and more like a response to pressure. Competition is the only fanboying I do, and right now, Microsoft is finally acting like they believe it too.
