About This Video

My fellow gamers, rejoice: Valve’s new Steam Controller is finally here, and I’ve had enough hands-on time to move past the “on paper” hype and into the real stuff—how it feels, how it plays, and whether the price makes any sense. I walk through the physical design (including some questionable plastic vibes and screw holes your fingers will absolutely find), the ergonomics (fine, but not quite Xbox-comfy), and the button feel—quiet membrane face buttons, decent paddles on the back, and triggers that… exist. The big win on the traditional-controller side is latency and stick performance, plus a genuinely clever wireless charging puck that doubles as the 2.4GHz dongle. But the real reason this thing exists is the haptic trackpads and Steam Input. These are Valve’s best trackpads yet, and they’re the secret sauce for bridging “desktop PC game” to “couch gaming,” especially for genres that normally hate controllers—like RTS. Add in gyro aiming (a total game-changer for old-school keyboard and mouse people like me) and TMR joysticks that deliver precision with low power draw, and you’ve got something uniquely capable. My problem? It’s a good controller… but it’s a $100 controller. If it was $60 I’d buy day one; at $100, I think I’m out.
