Sven from our business team (and certified man of culture) got picked for another $5,000 AMD Ultimate Tech Upgrade, which is hilarious because the dude already has a PS5, “every console under the sun,” a B4 OLED, and a retro corner that’s so aggressively ’90s it should come with a Capri Sun. But hey—random chance is random chance—so we dove into the Mom’s Basement Suite and did what we do best: tear things apart, roast cable management, and make the setup objectively better. The big-ticket PC changes were centered around an AMD X3D gaming CPU on an MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi board—because B850 is kind of the sweet spot unless you need a ton of PCIe expansion, and AMD still lets you overclock on mainstream chipsets. We also ditched the liquid cooler because Sven hates pump noise and setup pain, and honestly, I get it—good air cooling is just… nicer. On top of that, we added quality-of-life upgrades that don’t raise FPS but absolutely raise sanity, like an APC UPS for his server, plus streaming and content-creation gear—including an Electro-Voice RE320 and a proper boom arm. And then there’s the retro stuff: the RetroTink 4K is the “hook your old consoles to a big modern OLED without it looking like garbage” solution. Watching Goof Troop on a modern display with clean scaling is exactly the kind of unnecessary-but-awesome that makes this whole upgrade series fun.
