About This Video

Storage is boring… right up until you buy the wrong SSD and your “fast” PC starts feeling like it’s wading through peanut butter during updates, virus scans, or when the drive gets older and fuller. In this video I break down the not-so-obvious difference that a lot of manufacturers would really prefer you didn’t notice: whether the SSD has a dedicated DRAM cache chip. That little piece of silicon can hold the flash translation layer (basically the map that tells the drive where your data actually lives), which helps performance consistency and can even impact how the drive manages writes over time. I also explain why DRAM-less drives aren’t automatically trash. Modern NVMe SSDs can use Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to borrow a bit of your system RAM, and for secondary drives or gaming that can be totally fine in the real world. But for an OS drive, I strongly recommend getting something with DRAM, because that’s where you’ll feel responsiveness hits the most when background tasks pile up. The frustrating part is how hard some brands make it to figure this out without digging through third-party databases or literally peeling stickers—so I call out the lack of transparency and point you toward manufacturers that actually disclose what’s inside.
