About This Video

Five years ago I threw some money at Framework because I wanted a more sustainable, repairable laptop company to actually survive — and, yeah, I also wanted to see the new toys early. In this video, they roll in with four new products, and I’m equal parts impressed and annoyed that I’m seeing them “only” four days before the biggest announcement they’ve ever done. We start with the Framework Laptop 13 Pro: a new CNC aluminum “Pro” chassis, a bigger 74Wh battery, new speakers, and a fully custom 2.8K touchscreen that finally exists (what the hell took so long?). The matte anti-glare treatment is legitimately wild outdoors, and they’re even doing an official Ubuntu option with Canonical. Then we hit the Framework 16 refresh: cleaner one-piece haptic trackpad/keyboard modules, a more affordable Ryzen 5 option, and more community-driven modular weirdness — which is kind of the whole point of this platform. After that, the new OCulink Expansion Bay shows up as a dev kit for people who want native PCIe out to things like full desktop GPUs, with less overhead than Thunderbolt 5, but with the usual OCulink “quality of life” caveats like no hot-plug. Finally, the eyebrow-raiser: Framework made a keyboard, complete with a dongle garage, open-source firmware, and even open CAD for accessories. And yes, I also teased our own upcoming LTT battery bank with swappable “battery mags,” because apparently I can’t go five minutes without trying to modularize something.
