About This Video

In this WAN Show, I kicked off “Good News April” (with a couple of asterisks, because of course) by digging into the Steam Hardware Survey showing Linux jumping to 5.33% market share. No, it’s not because three of us started a Linux challenge a month ago… probably. We talked through the more boring-but-real explanation: sampling bias and Valve correcting for Steam China numbers, which made simplified Chinese drop hard and reshuffled the whole pie chart. Still, 5%+ is a number game developers actually have to care about, and I’m seeing more and more games “just work” on Linux—until you run into the killer-app problem (hi, kernel-level anti-cheat). Then we got into the kind of consumer tech news that actually makes me excited: DDR5 prices in China reportedly dropping by 30% amid a shifting market, with AI memory demand looking a lot less infinite than the hype train promised. I also shared some very real Linux friction from my own week: dying hard drives, NTFS weirdness with file transfers, and the “why is the GUI copy/paste not just… copying files?” experience. The funny part? Swapping my entire desktop environment was shockingly easy—Cinnamon out, KDE in—and it only made me more convinced that Mint + Cinnamon is the “I just want it to work” combo.
