In this video, I unbox the Kiwi Ears Aether and give my straight-up initial impressions—no fluff. Kiwi Ears sent this out, and I’ve been wanting to open it for a while, because on paper it’s kind of wild: around $170 (below $200) for a 15.3mm planar. I go through the accessories (tips, cable, case) and yeah—packaging looks more expensive than it is, but the accessory set itself is pretty “generic $100 IEM” to me. I also measure the shells (weight and dimensions) because fit matters, and this is a big boy. Then I get into the sound, and this is where I basically fall in love. It’s thin-leaning and bright-leaning, which is right up my alley, but I do want more bass extension (planar EQ makes that easy). The soundstage is the widest I’ve heard in an IEM so far—legit “information overload,” especially when I’m trying to focus on specific instruments. I also do Valorant gaming tests: imaging and stage are great, but depth/verticality can get confusing since the bass isn’t really pushing that layering forward. Comfort-wise, it’s light and secure, but the shell height/edge gave me a pain point in one specific area.
