In this video I put the “do DACs actually make a difference?” debate on the table using three price points: a ~$20 dongle DAC/amp, a ~$100 option, and the $200 SMSL AO300 Pro. My main point is pretty simple: most DAC/amps aren’t doing the magical “more open, more airy, more technical” thing people love to claim. Their job is to convert digital to analog properly, cleanly, and without adding coloration—and when you actually compare multiple sources, the measurable differences are tiny, mostly living in the upper mids to air region, and realistically not something most people will hear in normal, noisy real-life use. I also explain what DAC filters do (and don’t do). Outside of NOS/non-oversampling modes, the common filter options are basically “set and forget” because they don’t change things in a meaningful, audible way. Then I break down who the AO300 Pro is really for: if you’re just running IEMs, you’ll usually be better off buying something cheaper with the features you need. But if you want a clean all-in-one that can comfortably power harder-to-drive headphones and passive speakers, with lots of inputs/outputs and a sleek desktop/living room setup, the AO300 Pro actually makes sense—just don’t buy it because YouTube told you to add it to cart.
