About This Video

In this pigment spotlight I’m testing PBr25 (Imidazolone Brown) in watercolor, and I’m comparing how it looks across a bunch of brands—Holbein, ShinHan, Rosa Gallery, Mission Gold, and Daniel Smith. PBr25 is one of those smooth, transparent browns that feels “easy” to paint with, and it reads darker and more red-leaning than the classic orange-browns like Burnt Sienna (PBr7) or PR101. I swatch it out, look at how it behaves in washes, and talk about what makes one version feel higher quality than another. I also put PBr25 next to similar earthy pigments (including Roman Szmal PBr23, plus PBr7 and PR101) so you can see where it fits in a palette and when it’s actually the better choice. If you’re after a dependable, lightfast brown that stays transparent and plays nicely in mixes, this is the kind of pigment that can quietly become a workhorse. I’ll share which tubes I think are worth buying, which ones are more budget-friendly, and what to expect if you’re trying to track it down in sets versus as a single color.
