Let's take a look at the hidden ingredient in Manganese Blue Hue, the Daniel Smith Primatek Controversy, How to mix your own Lunar Blue and Blue Apatite Genuine! - show more for links - For science enthusiasts: Refract vs fluoresce? Whoops! I likely misspoke in the video at 3:40 regarding what visually appears similar to light being reflected (a glow effect) from the optical brightener. The molecules may get excited under UV (black light), fluoresce (emit blue light) and be considered "fluorescing" instead of "refracting". Refract is a term for light changing direction, usually as it passes through something else. Perhaps the paint and I both got excited (lol), but the thought behind "refraction" here has to do with the resin particles involved (often used in the making of fluorescent pigment powders). I asked one of the manufacturers of this type of UV effect paint about what was causing the glow. I was told that "the resin itself is refracting UV-A light". Kremer says the resin (either functioning as an optical brightener itself, or a binder for it) is hardened/dried, then pulverized into a powder like tiny clear crystals to be used in paint. About This Video

In this video I’m testing Daniel Smith Manganese Blue Hue and digging into what’s really giving it that bright, “glowy” look. I swatch it out, compare how it behaves in a wash, and talk about the hidden ingredient vibe—because this color is one of those that looks simple until you start asking why it’s doing that on paper. I also touch on the Daniel Smith Primatek controversy and why it matters to me as someone who cares about pigment info, labeling, and what we’re actually buying. Then I show you how I mix my own versions of two popular Primatek mineral colors: Blue Apatite Genuine and Lunar Blue. I walk through the mixing approach I use to get that mineral/granulating texture and the overall color impression without needing the exact tube. I also added a science note: I likely misspoke when I said “refract” in the video—what we’re seeing can be fluorescence under UV (like an optical brightener/resin effect). Either way, the takeaway is that the visual effect is real, and understanding what causes it helps you choose (or mix) colors more intentionally.
