You may see Gucai sold as "watercolor" but can classical Chinese paint be used on watercolor paper? It can, but here are some quirks to know! Compare watercolors vs Gucai Classical Artist sets. - Show more - These paints are available directly from Paul Rubens Official store on Ali Express. As they become available in other countries you may see them being listed as "watercolor" and not understand that these are not intended for the same use as their other paints. Hopefully this video will help clear up some differences between the sets. *** If you plan to use cellulose or cotton watercolor paper, instead of absorbent traditional papers like rice or mulberry, I wouldn't recommend these. *** Paul Rubens Gucai 36 pearlescent XL pan set may also be available on Amazon USA at https://amzn.to/3J2juyE (I expect Amazon to go in and out of stock during the initial release, as this is a brand new product released Nov. 2021. They will be getting the tubes in the future.) About This Video

In this video I’m answering a question I keep seeing pop up: if you see Paul Rubens “Gucai” being sold as “watercolor,” can you actually use it like watercolor on regular watercolor paper? I tested it on watercolor paper and compared it directly to Paul Rubens Watercolors (their pearlescent pans and tubes), and the big takeaway is that yes—you can get it to work—but it has quirks that make it feel very different from a normal watercolor painting experience. Gucai is a classical Chinese painting pigment system that’s really meant for more absorbent traditional papers like rice or mulberry, and that intended use shows. On cellulose or cotton watercolor paper, I don’t recommend it if you want typical wet-into-wet flow, easy glazing, and predictable washes. If what you actually want is a more enjoyable “traditional paint” experience, I share a few alternatives I’ve personally had better results with, and I also link my written review with still photos of the charts and swatches so you can zoom in and compare.
